Settling in Chicago, she performed onstage and on-camera, before discovering her exceptional talent for voiceover. Donna Jay developed a unique posture and devised helpful breathing techniques, gained from her years of singing and stage acting. She has worked continually since the mid 1990’s and has experience in all facets of the industry from gaming to promo–with lots of commercials in between.

Kiki Powell is senior business manager at mcgarrybowen/Chicago. She has worked on many iconic brands throughout her career: Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, Kraft brands, Sears, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Gatorade, Quaker brands to name a few. She loves commercial production behind the scenes, ’cause that’s where the true action really lives’. After graduating from University of IL/Chicago with a BA in Communications, she started on the reception desk. This gave her great insight and appreciation that no job is too small or detail too little to be examined. She works hard at being the consummate partner with her producers, providing support in legal and financial areas, with individual client’s guidelines and/or procedures as well providing union and/or trade organization contractual expertise. She’s keenly aware of the value and necessity of finding the right voice for the right spot and how the relationship works to either enhance the spot or kill it. Having produced, she understands the other side but it’s on the business management side she finds most satisfying. She enjoys being a part of the process that no one see’s or glorifies in commercial production. She’s very excited to share her viewpoint from the agency side especially from the business management perspective.

I'm glad you've finally come to your senses.

Patrick Fraley is one of the most well respected voice over performers and teacher in North America. He has been performing and teaching voice for 39 years. As a performer, he has created voices for over 4,000 characters, placing him in the top ten of all time to be cast in animated TV shows. Of recent, Patrick voiced characters on “Puss and Boots,” “Tangled,” “Happy Feet II,” “The Muppet Movie,” and Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”

As a teacher, last year Patrick guided over 65 performers into their first audiobook narration deals. He has been teaching, producing and performing audiobooks for 20 years, and is a multiple Audie Award nominee and winner.

Patrick, although American, began his career in Australia in 1974. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from Cornell University, Patrick moved “down under” where he performed the classics as a member of The South Australian Theatre Company, appeared in Peter Weir’s movie, “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” and toured the outback with his own theatre company. While living in Australia he learned the skill of creating, performing, and teaching character voice-overs. When he returned from Australia, he began his long career creating characters for animation at Hanna Barbara in Los Angeles.

Here are some comments from his students and colleagues on his teaching and performing:

Nancy Cartwright “Pat NEVER disappoints. His techniques cover everything the pros in the industry expect you to know, but nobody else teaches.”

Ed Asner “If you’re ready for an audio version of Cirque du Soleil, look no further than Pat Fraley.”

Craig Black (CEO, Blackstone Audio) “Simply put, Pat Fraley is the David Lean of Audiobook Producers. They don’t get any better.”

Brad Garrett “Pat Fraley is such a gifted and passionate coach that immediately after taking his class I became a hand model. He’s truly brilliant. Bring your wallet.”

Mark Hamill “One of the most talented actors I’ve ever worked with.”

Joe Mantegna “In the world of teaching voice over and vocal performance, Patrick Fraley is simply the best.”

Gary Owens “I’ve worked with Pat Fraley for many years doing cartoons and commercials. He is, with a doubt, the greatest character actor in the seat in front of me.”

Of course I'm open to new ideas...when they're "good" ideas.

JAY WADHWA always wanted to work in television. He even went to Boston University where he created his own degree in Broadcast Advertising so he could achieve his lifelong dream of writing beer commercials. (While that took a few years to happen, he finally did produce one for ESPN which won a national BDA award for Graphics Design.)

In 1991, his career started in New York in the Network Advertising & Promotion Department at CBS. From there, his path took him to the NBC Network where he worked his way up the ranks and produced promos for Today, Nightly News, Dateline, as well as produced Dateline International – a 1-hour weekly news magazine show. He eventually was asked to join the Creative Services Team at MSNBC, and moved over to Cable.

After an action-packed year at MSNBC which encompassed major events like the bombing at the Atlanta Olympic Games and the TWA Flight 800 crash (both in the same week!), the deaths of Princess Diana and Jean Benet Ramsey, he had his fill of sad news, and left News to freelance for a few years. His travels took him to Oxygen Media to help with its network launch to Beantown Productions to a few other Stations he hadn’t tried out yet (CNBC, WCBS, and ESPN).

It turned out ESPN was a great fit, since he stayed there for almost 5 years…working on all things sports and promotion.

The pull from his hometown roots in Chicago became too much though, and in 2004, he moved back and stepped into the roles of Manager of Creative Services and Manager of Local Brand Marketing where he oversees the day-to-day production of station Creative and Image. Since he’s been back in Chicago, he’s won 3 Emmys, 3 PROMAX awards, and nominated for several others…but his GREATEST accomplishment has been the fact that all the producers and GFX artists who have worked with him in the past 7 ½ years have EACH won Emmys since he’s been there.

Jay believes you have to fall in order to get up, so no sacrifice is too great…and when you’re right speak up…when you’re wrong, fake it.

You may be right for the part and not perfect for the role.

In 1997, David formed a second business, a logical off-shoot of his popular radio company, called VOX:Chicago Voice Casting, Inc.. Working along with partner Bonnie Murray (Leo Burnett’s talent coordinator for 23-years), VOX:Chicago became the city’s first voice-exclusive casting service. With an equally impressive client list, VOX:Chicago continues to be the most experienced and well respected voice casting company in town.

Of, course, experience takes time. The last of a classic breed, David Lewis actually started his advertising career in the mailroom. It was his summer job at W.B. Doner & Company in Detroit while he attended college at Eastern Michigan University. During his third summer stint (1975) between his junior and senior years, he was given a chance to be a copywriter. His first assignment, a radio spot for THE DETROIT NEWS, also turned out to be David’s first award-winner.

Upon graduation in 1976, David got his full-time job at Doner, where he worked under three different Creative Directors: Lawrence Kasdan, now an Oscar nominated Screenwriter and Director; Cathy Guisewite, who went on to create the popular comic strip “Cathy”; and Thom Sharp; now one of the country’s top commercial actors and voice-over talents. And, while David learned a lot from each, he takes all the credit for their individual successes.

From Doner, David moved on to Campbell-Ewald in Detroit, where he worked on Borden and Bil-Mar Foods. He also created a “little inside joke” that garnered a lot of national and, ultimately, international attention: The Rula Lenska Fan Club. It was a faux “fan club” for the then unknown star of a series of popular and campy television commercials for a national line of hair products. David’s little inside joke landed him on numerous TV shows, including “The Merv Griffin Show”, as well as dozens of radio shows across the country. David and his “Fan Club” were featured in TIME, NEWSWEEK, PEOPLE, US, and various other magazines, as well as in hundreds of newspapers in North America and Europe. It was his “15-minutes”. It was also the thing that got him noticed for a job at Leo Burnett in Chicago.

At Burnett, David worked on Kellogg’s, Keebler, Green Giant and other top brands. But his biggest success came on McDonald’s, where he wrote numerous memorable Ronald McDonald TV spots, and quite a bit of radio. During this time, David was a member of the comedy improv group “Easy Street”, and appeared in The Second City Children’s Show.

After five years at Burnett, David moved down the block in 1984, to Needham Harper & Steers (now DDB). While he was hired to work on Dial, Kraft, and Busch Gardens, a chance assignment on Bud Light changed the course of his career. It was a pair of Bud Light radio spots that just happened to solve a client’s lingering radio problem. David, and his whole creative group, in fact… were moved onto the Bud Light account soon after. While he wrote a number of the popular “Give me a Light” TV spots, it was his work on Bud Light radio that did the trick. They won a number of awards, and, in doing so, caught the attention of the legendary comedy radio advertising team of Bert, Barz and Kirby in Los Angeles. They offered David a job as their writer/director/producer in 1986.

It was a great experience. In his first year there, David shared credit for 11 of their Clio Awards finalists. He got to work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, as well as all of the top national voice talents. Best of all, he got to learn radio at the feet of the radio masters: Bert Berdis, Alan Barzman and Jim Kirby. And the stories he can tell you! The Gene Berry story is the best…

After 15-months in Hollywood, David was ready to head back to his beloved Chicago and a VP/Creative Director job at his equally beloved DDB. But after a couple years (1989), he longed for his more beloved radio work. With the encouragement and support of his bosses and friends at the agency, David left the company to form his own: David Lewis Creative Radio.

Since August of 1989, David has written, directed and produced literally thousands of radio spots for agencies and clients throughout the U.S., Canada, and England. His client list is as impressive as it is varied. Everything from beer to cattle wormers… Viagra to Midol. But what David is most proud of is that he’s never had to advertise or promote his business. He doesn’t enter awards shows or even send out sample reels. Not even a website. His business has come exclusively through word-of-mouth from his clients. And that’s the best advertising.

No one in advertising could possibly love their jobs as much as David Lewis loves his. He remembers a sign hanging in the office of one of his agency clients. It paraphrased the quote of a near-death stage legend… The sign read: “Dying is easy. Radio is difficult.” Well, not if you love it.
